Getting started in the gym - Session 1

Oct 15, 2021 | 0800 - 0930

Dr. Merv Travers

Squats are great, but they are not for everyone. Exercise prescription in clinical settings requires specific considerations in terms of safety, exercise selection and, most importantly, time. This workshop parallels Dr. Merv Travers' keynote lecture "Get safe, get competent, get strong" with an applied and practical focus. This practical workshop aims to demystify gym-based rehabilitation for clinicians.

Merv will guide you through a comprehensive repertoire of lower-limb exercises that can be coached safely and effectively for a wide variety of clients. We will cover aspects of gym safety, exercise modifications and alternatives in order to help you get that first programme started for your client. Participants will develop increased knowledge, skills and confidence in prescribing gym-based rehabilitation. Moreover, you should be energised and excited to get your patients in the gym.

Participants will need to wear suitable clothing and footwear for the gym.

Biomechanics of seating

What's different on wheels? A clinician's introduction to the wonderful world of wheelchair seating.

Oct 15, 2021 | 0830 - 1130

Jenni Dabelstein

Wherever you are sitting, the seating support surface is interacting with your body and gravitational forces to either support or oppose posture and activity. Wheeled seating and mobility is no different, but now you’re moving! With atypical body shapes, postures and movement patterns comes extra challenges to both support activity and participation while protecting the integrity of body structure and function.

Join me for a quick tour of some key ergonomic and biomechanical principals that apply to wheeled seating and mobility, and gain an understanding of how these can be manipulated to support function.

In this session I will provide insight into some of the key strategies that can be employed to optimise client outcomes, and how these might differ for paediatric and bariatric clients, as well as for sports applications.

By the end of this session, attendees should be able to:
1. Identify 3-5 foundation concepts fundamental to wheeled seating applications.
2. Have a strong appreciation of how wheelchair set-up can be manipulated to support function.
3. Understand why wheelchair set-up may differ for those with atypical body shapes or for specialised functions, such as sporting applications.

Lateral hip pain

Improving diagnostic accuracy and outcomes with an evidence-based approach.

Oct 15, 2021 | 0900 - 1200

Dr. Alison Grimaldi

Recent survey studies of physiotherapists in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia report that despite a growing body of high-quality evidence around assessment and management of gluteal tendinopathy, there is a lack of adequate translation of important information into clinical practice.

There appears to be over-reliance on 2-3 physical tests for diagnosis and underutilisation of a number of tests with good diagnostic utility. In many cases, selecting only 2-3 tests for gluteal tendinopathy/greater trochanteric pain syndrome may not be adequate for achieving a correct diagnosis.

Almost 100% of physiotherapists reported using ‘load management and exercise’ to treat this condition, and yet the details of treatments provided suggests that some key features of highly successful programs are missing and unhelpful interventions are still commonly included.

This workshop will focus on providing the detail behind evidence-based diagnostic testing and load management and exercise strategies for gluteal tendinopathy.

Participants will have the opportunity to master tests and exercises under supervision, to ensure optimal confidence and ease of transferring these skills into clinical practice.

The workshop is suitable for clinicians who want to fast-track patient outcomes by avoiding misdiagnosis and refining management programs.

Oct 15, 2021 | 0900 - 1200

Participants will have the opportunity to learn and master the hands-on skills required for mobilisation and manipulation of the foot and ankle.

The workshop would suit those interested in providing an adjunct treatment modality to improving orthotic compliance and restoring range of motion.

Mary Mitchell and Wilma Walsh

Participants will have the opportunity to practice specific tests of the wrist and hand, rehabilitation exercises and techniques and view differing splints.

The workshop is suitable for clinicians wanting to learn more about the wrist and hand.
