Injections masterclass for podiatrists

Ms Leah Cook | Podiatric Surgeon | FACPS (Fellow of the Australasian College of Podiatric Surgeons)

This workshop will build on your existing anatomical, clinical and pharmacological knowledge to give you confidence to use injection therapy on a more regular basis.

Oct 18, 2024 | 0800 - 1100
AMOUNT
149.00
TOTAL

Workshop Description

This workshop is designed to improve the practical skills required for injections of the foot and ankle. Injection therapy is an important part of foot and ankle management – as local anaesthesia for procedural work, as a diagnostic tool to support complex (sometimes confusing) imaging results and therapeutically.

This workshop will build on your existing anatomical, clinical and pharmacological knowledge to give you confidence to use injection therapy on a more regular basis. Specifically, we will focus on nerve anatomy, anaesthesia, and therapeutic and diagnostic injections as well as joint pathologies and injection therapy.

Volunteers will be required for the best learning outcomes to be achieved in this workshop.

Please note, endorsed prescribers are invited to stay for an extra class (11.00am - 12.00pm) exploring medications and injections included in their advanced scope of practice.

Exercise prescription for elbow tendinopathy

Associate Professor Leanne Bisset | School of Health Science & Social Work, Griffith University | PhD, MPhty (Manipulative Physiotherapy), MPhty (Sports Physiotherapy), BPhty.

This workshop will incorporate research evidence, tendon biology, exercise mechanisms, and patient-specific factors for exercise programs for people with elbow tendinopathy.

Oct 18, 2024 | 0800 - 1100
AMOUNT
100.00
TOTAL

Workshop Description

Exercise is the foundation for management of tendinopathies, as it has the capacity to stimulate biochemical processes through mechanical tendon loading that lead to tendon healing and repair. In addition, exercise has demonstrated other benefits such as analgesia and improved general physical and mental health. Yet the evidence only shows small incremental benefits for exercise compared to other interventions, with no one type of exercise superior to another.

In this workshop we will focus on exercise prescription for elbow tendinopathy. We will incorporate research evidence, tendon biology, exercise mechanisms, and patient-specific factors into the assessment and design of an exercise program for people with elbow tendinopathy.

This will be a highly interactive session that will include case studies in a discussion-based format.

Assessing for risk factors in recreational runners

Dr Benjamin Peterson | Senior Lecturer in Podiatry, CQUniversity | B.Pod, B.Health Sci (Hons), PhD

This workshop focuses on risk factors for injury among recreational runners and practical methods of assessing and managing specific injuries amongst runners.

Oct 18, 2024 | 0830 - 1130
AMOUNT
80.00
TOTAL

Workshop Description

Recreational running is among the most popular forms of recreational physical activity worldwide. Participation in recreational running comes with a wide array of health benefits and is protective against several high-burden non-communicable diseases. However, there is also a high prevalence of running-related injury, which has been cited as a key barrier to participation in recreational running.

Dr Benjamin Peterson’s research is focused on understanding the risk factors for running-related injury among recreational runners.

In this workshop, we will discuss what is known, and what is not known, about the risk factors for injury among recreational runners, as well as having an opportunity to practice methods of assessing and managing specific injuries among runners.

Using evidence to make sense of the story and support recovery

Associate Professor Ben Darlow | Musculoskeletal Specialist, University of Otago | PhD

This workshop focuses on exploring explanations about pain problems with practical cases demonstrating how to use these explanations in clinic to support positive impact.

Oct 18, 2024 | 0900 - 1200
AMOUNT

TOTAL

Workshop Description

People’s understanding of their health and their heath conditions is built on information and experiences that they have gained over time. This understanding informs their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

Explanations provided by health professionals have a key influence on people’s understanding of their health, what the likely outcome will be, and what they should do about it. These have the potential to positively, or negatively, affect the person.

This workshop will:
• Discuss the different types of evidence available to inform explanations about pain problems and how these can be explored.
• Discuss opportunities to seek new evidence that may help to resolve areas of uncertainty or inconsistency.
• Practice ways of using the physical examination to co-construct evidence
• Demonstrate ways to integrate evidence to build meaningful explanations that support health gain.

Patient case studies will demonstrate how this process can be used in the clinic.

Comprehensive hamstring rehabilitation in clinical practice

Nick Kane | Titled Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist | BAppSc, MPhty

This workshop focuses on implementing effective rehabilitation benchmarks for athletes recovering from hamstring injuries to optimse patient outcomes.

Oct 18, 2024 | 0900 - 1200
AMOUNT
80.00
TOTAL

Workshop Description

Over the past decade, Nick has developed a systematic approach to rehabilitation while working in the AFL. This approach relies on benchmark data to steer exercise progressions and facilitate return to play.

In this workshop, Nick will present straightforward and effective rehabilitation benchmarks specifically tailored for athletes recovering from hamstring injuries. These benchmarks are based on elite field sport practices but have been adapted to suit the practical needs of busy in-clinic practitioners, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

Attendees can expect to receive clear guidelines indicating an athlete's readiness to resume activities such as running, kicking, and engaging in high-speed running. In considering these guidelines, practitioners can confidently guide their patients through each stage of recovery, from injury to full functional capacity.

This workshop aims to equip participants with practical strategies and tools that can be seamlessly integrated into clinical practice, ultimately enhancing the quality of care provided to athletes recovering from hamstring injuries.
